The Art of Slowing Down
This photo was taken in Albuqurque, New Mexico when I was traveling the country on the Broadway National Tour of Jersey Boys in 2013. It was one of those happy accidents. I was out on a walk near my hotel and saw this rotted out billboard. The symbolism couldn’t have been clearer to me. It was a perfect metaphor for the lasting beauty of nature being revealed behind a once flashy billboard selling something in a past time. That image would become the defining image when I was struck a couple years later with idea of Yoguitar and the concept of The Art of Slowing Down.
So what is it? This Art of Slowing Down.
Well, to me it’s a way of life. It’s an intentional approach to a more balanced life amidst a hectic and relentlessly distracting life. There is no avoiding a busy life. In fact, that’s what keeps life exciting. I like being busy. I like excitement. But like many things in life, moderation prevails. However, finding new methods of moderation to counteract the frenetic pace of modern life is not easy. I suppose a mission statement was born. I wanted to dedicate a major portion of my artistic life to creating music that could help people slow down, unwind, find solace and just plain find joy in. A simple mission, but at it’s core the most important factor being sincerity.
I often overthink. I try hard to slow down my thoughts. I try to ease my tendencies to worry about all things of out of my control. I have no magic pill, no silver bullet, no potion. Just a few things that have worked for me along the way that I want to share. That is at the heart of the Yoguitar project. Music is a gift I was entrusted with. I want to use it for good. While that may sound pretentious or self important, to me it drives me everyday to keep creating new things and connecting with as many people I can. Let’s slow down together!
